This book contains a number of ideas on leadership you might not encounter in Western leadership programs. As you work through the book, or when you finished reading it, there might be additional leadership skills you want to add (you might find the collation of leadership tips provided in the Epilogue helpful).

Developing a learning plan that adds to your life rather than undermines it requires diligence, otherwise you can clutter an already busy schedule and overwhelm an already overstimulated brain.

Trying to take on too much information can create numerous problems in the workplace, including reduced productivity, mental clarity, quality of decision-making, effectiveness of communication and increased stress.

In traditional times, information overload wasn’t an issue but the rate of increase of information in the contemporary world is another story. In 1900, the amount of information in the world was increasing at a rate of approximately twice every hundred years. In 1945, the amount of information in the world had doubled every twenty-five years. It is now thought to be doubling every twelve hours, reinforcing the need for you to actively manage the overwhelming amount of data that you are being exposed to on a daily basis. The following tips might help you do this:

prioritise and sort information based on what is relevant;

be organised;

set boundaries around and time limitations on your consumption;

keep multi-tasking to a minimum;

avoid distractions;

take time out to clear your mind and daydream;

take micro-breaks;

identify in advance what information you need;

create a team contract to minimise the amount of information being circulated;

think about what you are sending out before you send it out;

keep communications simple;

take time out from technology;

skim articles; and

give yourself approval to ignore where appropriate.
